What do you all think of the Madeline McCann story?

I think that today I shall give more thought to the 30,000 children around the world who died because of poverty. More than enough people seem to be thinking about Madeline and her parents, so I'll try a prayer or two, and a thought for the thirty thousand.

What's so different about this story as opposed to all of the other child kidnap stories? Is the little McCann girl somehow special, better than all of the others who've been kidnapped?

She's white and blond, so... I'm very concerned.

    All good points

    I share the sentiments. Meanwhile

    My point is this:

There is a distinct lack of media criticism of the parents for leaving three toddlers home alone.

    Why is this?

Two hundred yards ain't very far, ya' know? Kids going to school and back are much further from their parents. Kids going to the mall are further, too. How 'bout the movies?

Kids age 2 and 3 don't walk to school on thier own neither do they go to the mall or movies.

    Pay attention will you.

Okay, but I'm still trying to figure out what makes this kidnapping so different to the other thousands that occur in the world every day? Is it only because you happen to hear about this one, and not the others? Or are you somehow connected to the family? Or what?

What makes this one so different that you posted it instead of all of the other kidnappings in the world?

This was in a safe, caring, family oriented community.
The parents checked back on the children fromtime to time.
Every newspaper reporter knows full well that every parent in the UK has done something similar on occassion.

Not really, this subject was brought up. The parents acknowledged their lapse in judgement. It would be cruel to add to their misery with more criticism.

    NO we have NOT Ophiolite

Every parent I know is shocked to the core these kids were left alone, we all thought it was illegal for one! Not one person I know does this. They'd be reported if they did. In the uk all kids under 13 have to have a sitter.

Its actually pretty common in Asia; I was never accompanied everywhere as a child, left alone at home frequently and walked to and from school with my sisters from a very young age. I've seen the same in the Middle East too; its only in the US that I have seen parents accompanying children everywhere.

It is cruel to children to leave them unprotected. That is cruel.

I do sympathise with the parents but I am cross.

you were left home at night alone age 3?

In the Uk this is NOT the norm it is very much regarded as neglect.

Not at night, but in the daytime, there were other children, but no adults. But if they put her to bed and went next door, its not really criminal, is it?

I'm from the UK. I know what I see. I know what people pretend happens. I know what actually happens. That's why there is such a furore over this incident - all those parents feeling little pangs of guilt over how lucky they were to get away with it when they did it.
You clearly live in a very special place where everyone follows correct practice to the T.

Is it common practice to leave the door unlocked when one is at home?
