Wow. The permaban list reads like a Ripley's Believe or Not of Bastardy chart.

Yep, according to the ban list.

    Bishadi // James R // 10-03-09 // 32 Days // 11-03-09, ~02:00 AM // 27 Days, 7 Hours // death threat to another member

I think hey should always be taken seriously and the person making the threat should be permanantly banned - and perhaps even reported to the authorities.

I think 31 days is plenty. 32 is too long.

    General statement

The period is a result of a natural occurrence: the actual suspension is thirty days. However, it was applied with some time remaining on a prior seven-day trip, and consecutively as opposed to concurrently.

The threat in question was delivered via private message, and is clear enough that, were we inclined to be completely paranoid about them, is actionable at least under American law. I would presume the same of British, Canadian, and Australian law, as well. Probably most, if not all, of Europe. About the only defense for it is a spelling error, and I'd love to see a defense attorney sell that one to a jury.

I am unable to speak to the administration's decision regarding law enforcement, although I can comment that at no time in my ten years at Sciforums have I ever been contacted by authorities in relation to anything anyone ever posted or transmitted at this site.

you cant be serious. i dont know the nature if this, and it is not my business, but for one thing 99.999% of the people here have no idea how to locate the person they are arguing with and then we need to look at the context. was the person baited and treated badly? i would lean towards yes.

otoh, i think too many bans are too short. in this case 30 day ban (or whatever he got) would be sufficient.

CONVERSELY, it is not a good way to behave.

Specially international threats should be taken seriously, when the 2 posters has a couple of thousand miles between them. Imagine the headline:

Sciforumer travels 3000 miles to carry out threat!

nope I dont agree with you, I think that 31.5 days is plenty and 32.1 days is too long.

Are you assuming that it could never happen?

There are some people who actually are that batshit insane (remember the woman who drove across the US wearing a nappy?). Whether this particular individual is truly that mad, we do not know. But he made the threat and was banned.

In this instance, the threat was made via PM. It was in breach of this forum's rules and was worded in a way that indicated he was not actually joking.

    Yup.

    See this:

New York man pleads guilty to Internet death threat
    By Carson Walker, Associated Press
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A former Veterans Administration law enforcement officer
from New York state will serve six months of home confinement for threatening
to kill a Rapid City woman through e-mail.

    The article: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2003-11-04-death-threat-guilty_x.htm

@John: There are other cases as well.

    trust me. i attract nuts.

if i am in a crowded room and a crazy person enters the room they hone right in on me. at least this used to be the case.
