Man Arrested For Allegedly Hitting Golf Balls Into Substation
24-Year-Old Faces Charges
WESTLAKE, Ohio -- A local man is accused of damaging a substation in Westlake by driving golf balls toward the electrical equipment.
Officials said William Scarvelli, 24, of Sheffield Lake, initially denied that he was hitting the golf balls from his parents' Bay Village home, which is across the railroad tracks from the substation.
After officers interviewed Scarvelli and left the home, two more balls reportedly hit the substation. Police returned to the Bay Village home and arrested the suspect.
Six insulators attached to lines carrying 100,000 volts were damaged. The repair is estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The substation serves thousands of area residents.
Scarvelli was arraigned on charges of attempted disruption of public service and vandalism. He is due back in Rocky River Municipal Court on Aug. 27.
