Does anyone have one? What are they like? Is it easier to manage your desktop with these? Is there room to view a lot of things at once?

Got a 21 inch - carry over from using CAD systems at work (but it's a CRT huge as f*ck and heavy, although I am looking to get a 22 inch flat screen soon). It's not too bad, set the resolution high enough and you have loads of room - but NEVER enough. At work I have two monitors and sometimes wish I had three.
The main problem now is whenever I use any other PC I can't work out why things always look so small

I went with a friend to pick up a 21" CRT from the third floor of a building with no lift. The bloke offered to carry it to the car, you could see the pain in his eyes by the time he got to the car.

Any ideas what 22" Flat Screen you will be getting? What should I look out for? I recon I'll get one with in the next few months.

I have NO idea. My friend is on good terms with a guy that used to run a computer shop locally, he's now going into web design since rents put him effectively out of business, but he still has contacts. He said he can get me a 22 inch flat screen for ~£200, so I thought "what the hell, why not?". It'll give me far more desk space.
But I'll ask him, and pass on the info.

21" crt(huge)...which is still better than ANY 22" flat panel one you are going to find. They cannot compete with old trinitrons for resolution...yet.

How so? Am I making a mistake here? (Not definitely ordered yet, so no probs if I change my mind).

Ok I could be wrong , but even 2 years ago the 17" could barely get up to the equivalent resolution on an old 17" Trinitron. 19" for sure could not(though now probably could). I really suspect the 22"/21" cannot compete with ol' bessy 21" Trinitron. I suspect if you use CAD you WILL notice a difference most people could not. I know from supporting you guys, you will notice a dead pixel in the corner.

Thanks for that. I'll do a lot more checking. I automatically assumed (okay, shoot me!) newer = better. My 21" CRT is 7 years old now (and still going strong after two house moves as well).

Here is a (2 year old again) review of a good LCD monitor. This person seems to know his monitor tech....

"- The pixel pitch of .294mm may be standard for 19" LCD's, but it takes a bit of getting used to when compared to something much tighter on a good CRT, like .24mm on a high-end Sony Trinitron CRT. I find .294mm to be a bit "blocky", but I guess there isn't much else to say about it until the technology improves. Some people might never notice this, but I guess it depends on what is "normal" for you. For me, I sure hope the manufacturers work to improve this in the future."

I'll have to check on what my current monitor does and compare with the new one. Damn, and the flat screen looked so cool. :bawl:

Well I'd hate to steer ya the wrong way, I can't find much current information on this. Basically If you like to run at higher than the "native resolution" of the LCD(like if you like 1600X1200), then you could really notice the difference.

You're CRT is probably like at least .24 (a good one would be .22) and you can compare that to the LCD ones.

As far as I know niet is right CRT's still offer the better quality. However, unless you are very into details in your work I doubt many people would notice. Also I think the surrounding of the monitor affects how we perceive the picture, very much like a good painting needs a good frame. So TFT's score an extra point on this.

I'll have a look. After all we now use flat screens at work and I don't do a great deal of CAD stuff at home, but if the CRT has better resolution I'll stick with it.

I have a free 20" Trinitron going to anyone that wants it, ... pinned out for a SPARCstation though. Oh, and you have to take the pile of old SPARCstations it's attached to, I'm getting grief from the missus about the mess.

UK/Midlands area if anyone is interested.

I've got a 22" Widescreen LCD, max resolution of 1680x1050. Before this I had a 21" CRT, the resolution was higher but the thing was a beast. To me the slight drop in resolution was worth the extra desk space and asthetic feel of the flatpanel. There's never enough desktop space though no matter what your resolution.

It might just be because I never bought a later model CRT, but I've never seen a CRT have a higher resolution than a same size LCD. In my experiences if you can find a bright (>300cd/m2), low response time (<10ms) LCD it'll beat out any CRT. I would suggest looking at the Acer AL2216W, I have the AL2416W and I couldn't be happier with it.

Get a flatscreen, they're great. I don't know what CRT and LCD is and I've never even heard of this Max Revolution bloke. Cool name, though - I wish I was called that!!!

But yeah anyway, get a flatscreen, they're great.

And for God's sake make sure it's a DELL.

Two screens are way better than one giant screen.

Probably so, but the two screens are at work and the (big) one is at home....
