I guess it is the popular time for reflection ....

what are our indications of optimism/pessissimism regarding the state of affairs of the world into the new year?

I'm always optimistic that I can make a nice sandwich to eat and I'm always optimistic that the sky won't fall on my head, but everything else is a real gamble.

The world will be greater next year than this year. History is always in some sense progressive.

After over 62 years on this planet, living with humans and their many, many faults, I can find no optimism for the future ...this coming 2007 or any of the continuing years.

Mankind has fucked his whole planet, and worse, he sees it, knows it, yet he continues to fuck it up at an even more rapid pace ...including making more humans to help him do it. How can anyone have any optimism for a specie like that?

what do you make of these quotes then?

George Bernard Shaw:

We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.

George Santayana:

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Baron Max:

You are 62 years of age?

You have the fire of a much younger man. And I should hope you'd take that as a compliment.

LightGigantic:

I agree: An ignorance of history is a set up for failure in the present and catastrophe in the future. However, it is not so often that we completely disregard history, thankfully. We do indeed recall somethings from the past, even amongst the general populace. In as much as this holds true, we refine the future in part. What is most dangerous is those movements which encourage a radical departure from the past and its consideration as irrelevant.

I have to agree with Max, not because I am a pessimist, but because I am a realist. There are just way too many things that can go wrong, so applying Murphy, a few of them will go wrong....

As the world gets more and more interlocked economically, politically, technically, a little thing happening here can effect bigger things happening there...

Me too. 2007 is scary, but I'm getting older and I'm unsure of my future. Some things will get worse and some will get better, but mainly I'm judging it on my personal situation. What's a little oppression when you have a lovely woman and happiness? That's my plan anyway, and I've found one that fits the glove. Time shall tell, although I'm prepared for disappointment.

I prefer even numbers on the whole, so we shall see. Just now life is good. Wine, cigarettes, chatting with beautiful women and all the fun that comes with a common milestone. Let's celebrate, while we can!
