DEKALB, Ill. - A gunman opened fire Thursday in a packed lecture hall on the campus of Northern Illinois University, wounding as many as 16 people, police and witnesses said. Police said the gunman was dead.

Police reported that the scene was secure and that the gunman was “no longer a threat” about an hour after the shooting, which occurred about 4 p.m. ET in Cole Hall. It was not immediately clear whether the man committed suicide or was killed by police.

See, this is why we need a stronger, well-armed and authorized police and military force.

wrong! Why do you think that having a police state or something like that will make life safer? These people(who shoot other people in public places) do not much care about getting killed by police. "Stronger, well-armed and authorized police and military force" is only good for controlling people and stripping them from their rights.

Campus police were there within 2 minutes of recieving the call so I don't know how much better they could have reacted. That is an open campus which means anyone can come in and walk around as they please. The gunman must have driven in to the campus for he was a former student there and just wasn't noticed doing anything wrong. There's no way to protect students in a situation like that other than having uniformed officers in every room on the campus and that will never happen.
