A baby is born with 12 fingers and 12 toes - is it right for the parents to have the extra digits surgically removed, or should they wait for the child to make his own decision later on? This might be an evolutionarily beneficial mutation. They might be sabotaging evolution.

Even if they have the chopped, he woudl still pass the gene on.

By the way, uless they were directly physically detrimental in some way, I wouldn't chop them.

Yes, of course, but also if chopped he would not be doing anything useful like learning how to efficiently use the extra digits. Hence he wouldn't be able to pass his freak learnin' on to his freak child.

Good point.

Did you learn to use your 5 digits by mimicking your parents?

When I look at my children growing up they mostly learn to use their digits by doing stuff with them. In fact the fetus is already practising motor control before he enters the world. It seems unlikely to assume someone went into the vagina to show the fetus how to make a fist.

Some behavioural patterns are learned, some motoric skills are copied. Some are tought. Using a hand with extra digits doesn't seem quite the leap that requires the didactic intervention of a parental unit.

of course, this is just my opinion

Finally, a child is born who will be able to relate to the formally English, adopted American system of mismeasurement. All he'll need to do is come up numbers to follow 12, in base 12. It's a sign from Egad.
He'll have all the extra digits surgically removed in a couple of weeks, his mom said.

Oh, well. He surely doesn't want that foreskin either. What did he say? "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

No matter. Surely the metric system will finally become accepted in the US in his lifetime, and penis mutilations will stay trendy.

I think they may be surgically altering an evolutionary mutation. Who says extra fingers and toes are bad??

If you haven't caught on by now, God doesn't know what the hell he's doing.

picture (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2007/08/29/2007-08-29_baby_boy_born_with_twelve_tiny_fingers_t.html). You can barely see his pinkie. I would have it cut off if it wasn't functional. But if there was bone in it connected to the hand bones, its staying.
This baby's extra digits aren't functional.

6 fingered hand (http://www.stevequayle.com/GG.Images/6-fingers.jpg). Here's a functional one.

I think it would be cool...I could finally count a dozen donuts without using my toes. :)

"Hey man...give me six!"

Imagine the types of chords and runs one could play with 6 fingers.

I do not believe everything in the handme-down accounts of the "bible", on the topic of six fingers it is quite clear. To use another well used modern quote: "Even the sun shine's on a dog's ass twice a day". The Hebrew history was correct on accounts of Jericho, of Hittites, of Philistines long before science proved them true:

So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath. 22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days. 27And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; 28Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. 29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. 30And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. 31But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. 33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Num. 13:21-22, 25, 27-33)

And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot and he also was the son of the giant. 1 Chronicles 20:6
